St Bernard's High School & Arts College

School Awards

Ofsted

“This is an outstanding school. Its Christian values of respect, service and justice forms the basis for the spiritual, moral, social, cultural and intellectual development of every pupil. Parents praise the school for its achievements and for the richness of the education it provides for their children, commenting that it ‘encourages pupils to believe in themselves, aim high mentally, physically and socially, and develop a sense of moral values and responsibility to the wider world”

Arts Mark Gold

The school successfully achieved and has retained Arts Mark Gold status since 2004. This is a National award which recognises schools with a high level of provision in the arts.  St Bernard’s High School and Arts College was awarded gold status for its commitment to the arts through both curriculum and extracurricular activities. We are committed to raising the profile of the arts in school and the wider community.

  Arts Specialism

St Bernard's High School and Arts College gained Specialist Schools Status in the Arts in September 2004.  A second specialism in Science was also attained in December 2007.  Arts College status has enabled the school to further develop the subjects of Art, Drama, Dance and Music.  Demanding targets in these subjects and innovative and exciting creative approaches to teaching and learning across the whole curriculum has had considerable impact on standards at the school as shown by outstanding examination results.

Science Specialism

The School was awarded a second Specialism in the Science in December 2007.  This will enable the School to further develop the subjects of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics and to develop links with the rest of the curriculum. The Science Specialism has given the School the opportunity to extend and enrich the Science curriculum, offering subjects such as Astronomy and Triple Science.  Extra-curricular Science is extremely popular with after school clubs for Robotics and KS3 Science.

Sports Mark

The Sports Mark award is Sport England’s accreditation scheme for secondary schools.  It is a developmental and auditing tool that rewards and recognises a school for its out of hours sports provision and a broad and balanced Physical Education curriculum.  St Bernard’s High School achieved the Sports Mark award for the second time in February 2009

IIP (Investors in People)

During the Autumn Term 2008, Investors in People carried out a further assessment of St Bernard’s and we passed the required standards in all areas, being awarded “exceptional practice” in some areas.  We value the efforts of all our staff very highly and it is pleasing to have official recognition of this.

ROQA (Recognition of Quality)

The ROQA (Recognition of Quality Award) is for Work Experience Pre-16. The award is sponsored by ROQA and Connexions and is designed to show that we reach quality standards for our Work Experience Pre-16 provision within school. The various principles against which we are assessed are Commitment, Management, Entitlement, Process, Integration and Partnership

Healthy Schools

The School achieved Healthy Schools Status in 2007.  This was in recognition of the work the school has done to develop and improve student and staff physical, spiritual and emotional health.  Through sporting opportunities, a balanced and nutritional canteen menu, challenging academic targets, a focus on emotional literacy, consideration for the environment, an ethos of “loving one another”, St Bernard’s is consciously helping build a sustainable community.

  Creative Partnerships

Creative Partnerships is a professional organisation that supports schools to develop creativity across the curriculum. St Bernard’s High School has been working with Creative Partnerships since September 2008. Through the support of CP, the students in year 9 are currently working with a professional composer, a script writer and a stage designer in order to further develop their appreciation of the Expressive Arts. This work could lead to the students achieving a GCSE in Performing Arts, or an Arts Award.
